The Australian National University (ANU) conducted the ESS in an Australian context, under the title of the Australian Social Survey International – ESS (AUSSI-ESS). The purpose of the Australian study was to conduct a national study that enabled cross-continent comparisons to European countries that participate, to better understand the similarities and differences between countries. The fieldwork methodology for AUSSI-ESS was completed using self-completion of surveys via the web. This was different to that traditionally used in the ESS, which had used face-to-face survey methods almost exclusively through Wave 9.
